Kazumi Muraki (born: August 18, 2000) is a Japanese chemist, inventor, adventurer, and social entrepreneur. He is the President and Director of the Carbon Recovering Research Association (CRRA). He specializes in CO2 direct air capture (DAC) and synthesis of fuels and chemical products from CO2 (C1 Chemistry). He conducts independent research at CRRA on topics ranging from how to solve climate change to how to realize human migration to Mars.

 

He started his career as a chemist in 2010, when he was in the 4th grade of elementary school. In 2017, when he was a sophomore in high school, he was selected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) for the Strategic Information and Communications R&D Promotion Programme (SCOPE) for the INNO-vation prize in the disruptive technology category. He then founded CRRA and become its director at the age of 17. In 2019, due to his research achievements, he was admitted to the University of Tokyo after passing the entrance examination with a recommendation (Engineering Area 5) and enrolled in the Science I class. Currently, he is a 4th-year student in the Nozaki Research Laboratory of the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, and from January 2021, he was also a special researcher (Science Fellow) at the Frontier Research Center, POLA Chemical Industries, Inc, the research and development division of POLA, a major cosmetics manufacturer. Since March of the same year, he has also served as a scientific and technical advisor for an agri-tech company, Happy Quality Co. In September of the same year, he became a moonshot ambassador for the Cabinet Office. In March 2022, he became a member of the Future Yamanashi Creation Council, an advisory body to the Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture. Awards and recognitions include: Forbes JAPAN 30 UNDER 30 2019 in the Science category as "30 Japanese under 30 who will change the world" (2019), Forbes JAPAN 100 as "100 people of the year" (2021), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications INNO-vation (2017), the Satoshi Omura Natural Science Prize (2018), and more.

 

His dream is to "stop global warming, save all 7.9 billion people on Earth, and become the first human being to emigrate to Mars."

・I am a true fan of science. When I was two years old, when I was on the train, I asked my parents, "Hey, why does the nearby scenery pass by so quickly, but the distant scenery passes slowly?"

 

・People often mistakenly think I was always into science-based courses; however, I was actually original into humanities-based courses. My favorite subjects were Japanese, social studies, and English, and I often wrote novels when she was little. When I was in the first grade of elementary school, I started reading Natsume Soseki's "I Am a Cat" and read up to page 125, but at the public elementary school I was enrolled in at the time, I was a librarian because the students were competing for the number of books to read. I was very frustrated when my homeroom teacher picked up the book and said, "Don't read that kind of book, read 'Incredible Zorori' (a children's book series) and you can read a higher quantity of books." By the way, when it comes to mathematics, when I was in the fifth grade of elementary school, I scored 5 points on a test out of 100 points, and in the third year of high school, I received only 5 points out of 200 points on a mock test. As for science, I love research and am good at it, but I am not necessarily good at paper exams.

 

・So, from a literary point of view, I decided to carry out activities to "tell people who don't understand or hate science the magic of science."

・Aiming to be "Akira Ikegami of the scientific world," I try to speak in an easy-to-understand and fun manner without using technical terms.

 

・In order to attract the interest of the general public, my motto regarding research is "cutting-edge inside, soft and fluffy on the outside." All the names given to the inventions are Yurufuwa-style. So far, the inventions are Hiyassy, Torussy, the Sorarin Project and the stratospheric probe, Mokumoku.

 

・I have always loved looking at food ingredients. I was particularly excited to see the food additive terms written towards the end of food labels.

 

・💡 An idea I came up with which became my motto is "Execute immediately! If it doesn't work, you can just undo it, but try it first."

・I don't know if these are special abilities, but I have absolute pitch and synesthesia (feeling colors and sounds with numbers). Maybe this is the influence of playing the piano when I was little. 0 is black. 1 is red. 2 is green. 3 is pale yellow. 4 is slightly reddish purple. 5 is yellow like a banana. 6 is indigo. 7 is bright yellow, and 8 is more orange. 9 feels reddish brown. I can't see the colors in particular, but I feel them somehow. The reason for this is the colors of the numbers on a poster that was pasted in the bath at home when I was in kindergarten. It was a Yancharu Moncha poster. (lol)

 

・I am not good at math, but good at memorizing meaningless strings of numbers and symbols, such as passwords, card numbers, etc. The circumference of the circle which I can remember is 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749445923078164062862089986280348253421170679821480865132823066470938446095505822317253594081284811174502841027019385211055596. I hope this skill will be useful one day, but I have never performed it in public. The only things that I find useful are that I can remember complex Wi-Fi passwords after repeating them several times, so it is convenient to connect to the Internet. Also, I remember all my credit card information, so online shopping is convenient (lol).

CO2直接空気回収(DAC)

・CO2回収装置「ひやっしー

 高校2年生の時に発明した世界最小のCO2回収装置。

 地球温暖化の原因であるCO2を空気中から回収し、地球を“冷やす”装置ということから、“ひやっしー”と名付けた。

 初号機から改良を重ね、性能が向上。現在は第4世代を販売中

 日本全国のひやっしーはオフィスのエントランスやご家庭、図書館、病院、学校などでCO2回収に励んでいる。

 2024年からは海外への輸出も開始予定。

 

CO2からの燃料・化成品合成(C1化学)

​・石油代替燃料「そらりん」

​ ひやっしーが回収したCO2をエタノールに変換し、石油代替燃料を合成する。

​ この燃料を、空(そら)からつくったガソリン=「そらりん」と呼び、社会実装に向けて研究を推進中。

 燃料生成にはSP1(バイオ燃料・生化学的方法)SP2(化学的合成法)の2つのルートを用いている。

本論文の経過補足:

実験は2017年に、広島大学のご協力の下行いました.

その後投稿の機会を窺っていましたが, 学位授与機構の条件として, 学位論文として提出する論文はジャーナル投稿前に限るという要件があり, 私自身の学士号取得の為に投稿することができないままいました. 本年度に学位取得後はすぐにジャーナルに投稿し, 発表予定です.

2024年3月追記:2月に学位を取得した為, 制約がなくなりました. 現在ジャーナルへの投稿準備中です.
